Why Roberson
Fencing crews that understand how solar gets built
A solar site isn't a backyard fence job. You're dealing with hundreds of acres, long straight runs, soft or rocky soil, wet seasons, and a schedule that has every trade stacked behind the one in front of it. The fence often has to go up early to protect the laydown yard and equipment, then tie in cleanly around inverter pads, the substation and the point of interconnection.
Roberson Construction gives developers, EPCs and general contractors a Mississippi-based fencing partner that works across six states, shows up, keeps lines straight, keeps the site clean, and communicates the whole way through. We read the drawings, walk the site, and give you a detailed line-item proposal you can actually compare.

What we install
Fence systems for every part of the site
Every system is built to your drawings. Not sure which fits? We'll walk through the options and price alternates.
- Most common
Chain Link Security Fence
7' galvanized or black vinyl-coated chain link with a 1' three-strand barbed wire extension for an 8' overall height — the standard perimeter on the solar sites we build.
- 9 ga or 11 ga fabric, 2" mesh
- Top rail or tension wire
- Concrete-set or driven posts
- Low visual impact
Agricultural-Style Fence
Fixed-knot woven wire on wood or steel posts for counties, landowners and permits that call for a rural, farm-style look instead of chain link.
- Typically 8' tall
- Wood or steel line posts
- Blends into the landscape
- High security
Substation & Switchyard Fencing
Heavier-duty perimeter around the project substation and interconnection equipment, with barbed or razor toppers and grounded fence fabric per the electrical design.
- 8' and taller overall
- Barbed wire or razor ribbon
- Grounding per EOR design
- Every entrance
Gates & Access
Cantilever slide gates, double-drive swing gates and pedestrian gates sized for maintenance vehicles, fire apparatus and daily O&M traffic.
- Cantilever & swing gates
- Man gates & lock chains
- Gate automation available
- Day one
Construction-Phase Security
Early perimeter and laydown-yard fencing to protect panels, inverters and copper while the site is being built.
- Laydown & staging yards
- Phased installation
- Temporary-to-permanent planning
- When required
Wildlife-Friendly Options
Small-animal passage openings or alternative fence styles where environmental or permit conditions call for them.
- Built to permit conditions
- Coordinated with your environmental team
Specifications
Typical 8' perimeter fence
Our standard solar perimeter is 7' of chain link fabric topped with a 1' barbed wire extension for 8' overall. Your project drawings always govern, and we build to them.
| Overall height | 8' typical (7' fabric + 1' barbed wire); taller available |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Galvanized or black vinyl-coated chain link, 2" mesh, 9 or 11 gauge |
| Posts | Galvanized steel pipe; concrete-set or driven depending on soil and spec |
| Line post spacing | 10' maximum on center typical |
| Topper | 3-strand barbed wire on extension arms; razor ribbon on request |
| Bottom | Tension wire with tight ground clearance to discourage digging and crawling under |
| Grounding | Bonding and ground connections installed per the electrical engineer's design |
| Gates | Cantilever slide, double-drive swing and pedestrian gates; automation available |

How tall does a solar farm fence need to be?
Most of the solar sites we build use an 8' overall perimeter: 7' of chain link fabric plus a 1' barbed wire extension. That's above the 7' minimum commonly referenced from NESC guidance for fencing around electric supply equipment. The utility, county, insurer or your engineer may require something different, so we always build to the project drawings and specifications.
Do you install agricultural or deer-style fence instead of chain link?
Yes. Many counties and landowners prefer the lower-visual-impact look of fixed-knot woven wire on wood or steel posts. We'll price whichever system your permit and drawings call for, and we can price alternates if you're still deciding.
Can you drive posts instead of setting them in concrete?
When the spec and soil conditions allow it, driven posts can save a lot of time on long runs. Where concrete footings are required — like corners, gates and terminal posts — we set them in concrete.
Do you handle fence grounding?
We install the fence bonding and grounding connections shown in your electrical design and coordinate with your electrical contractor. The grounding design itself comes from the project's electrical engineer of record.
Can you work around other trades and a phased schedule?
Yes. Solar sites are busy. We phase our work around civil, pile driving, racking and electrical crews, and we can put up early security around laydown yards before the permanent perimeter is complete.
What do you need from us to provide a bid?
Site plans or fence layout drawings, fence and gate specifications, approximate linear footage, the project location, and your target schedule. A link to a Dropbox, Google Drive or plan room works great.
Where do you work?
We're based in Pearl, Mississippi and install solar farm fencing across Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas. If your project is somewhere else in the region, reach out — we'll let you know if we can take it on.
